============================================================

While James is in San Diego at the AAR/SBL meetings, he asked me to
write up a sale of some of the interesting books that have come
across my desk in the last year. The first six appeal to me as
an artist; the last appeals to me as an interested layman.

I've always deeply enjoyed the intersection of art and Christianity,
and my own aspirations as a calligrapher make me appreciate all the
more the monumental achievement that is the St. John's Bible. The
St. John's Bible is the first handwritten, illuminated Bible since
the invention of the printing press, and the results so far are
stunning. A slideshow of images from the project can be seen here:

Even though we're surrounded by books here at the office, it's not
often that the employees will band together to place orders. This
is one of those rare exceptions: nearly a quarter of us here at
the office are saving up and ordering copies of these books for
ourselves and to give as gifts at Christmas. We have five of the
projected seven volumes, and a "making of" book that describes
the artistic process:

And now, for something completely different.

Archaeology seems to be something that happens just after I leave a
place. When I was in grade school, I always used to dig holes with my
friends on the playground. The year after I left, a girl was digging
in the same area, and came across a bone. The excavation that followed
revealed a sort of prehistoric horse, among other things. Years later,
when I was living in Spain, I used to hone my mountain biking skills on
what now turns out to be a Phoenician tell of some importance.

Next time, perhaps. That's where the next title in our sale comes into play:

"Archaeology: What it is, where it is, and how do it"
by Paul Wilkinson
Oxbow Books, 2007. Paper. English.
ISBN: 9781905739004
List Price: $24.95 Your Price: $22.46

This is an excellent introduction to practical archaeology, and it's
obvious from the details that there is considerable field experience
behind the well-written descriptions covering a variety of methods and
techniques. Chapters include useful information on finding documentary
sources, aerial photography, soil sampling, surveys (including various
types of GPS equipment) and a variety of recording methods, including
special techniques for stone, timber, and skeletal finds. While there's
not enough here to turn someone loose on their own, it's an excellent
beginning to get someone up to speed with the rest of the team.
